Music has always had a special place in our minds and lives, many people may say that mental health and music are connected, as music can affect how we feel and how we think.
Listening to music can change your mood. For example, upbeat music makes you feel energized or happy, while slower, softer music can calm you down. This happens because music stimulates dopamine release while at the same time reducing cortisol. Which is why whenever you play your favorite song, your mood might instantly shift.
People may find music as a way of expressing emotions, whether it be sadness, anger, or anxiety. Listening to music that matches your feelings can make you feel understood and less alone. It can connect to mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. Sometimes it may be used in therapy, as music is known to help people cope with depression, trauma, or anxiety. Music also helps enhance focus and can be used as a motivator when studying or during work.
I personally like listening to a mix of soft and upbeat music when it comes to studying or just cleaning. When listening to music and your favorite tones, can create a lock-in state where you are in a flow state that makes it easier to stay on task. However, just as there is a positive side to music, there can be negative sides as well. Like listening to sad music sometimes can deepen the negative feelings instead of helping you move through them, depending on what you are listening to. Overall, music provides comfort and is a tool that we all use to help us feel understood and motivated.
Teenagers have strongly been impacted by music and that has helped their mental health as it connects to emotions which teenagers usually have a hard time expressing. Most teens relate to artist who express in there music relatable lyrics and experiences during a time where teens are figuring out there emotions. Taking everything into account music plays an important role in supporting our mental health by helping process emotions and providing a healthy way to express feelings and be connected with others.
