The transition to college can be daunting to some. I know that it is for me, I’ve procrastinated going to college and even debated on just taking a gap year to really focus and see what I want for my future. However, the pressure to go to college is strong especially as a first generation student.
Being a first generation student means that you have more on your plate especially when it comes to transitioning into college. The transition from high school to college is pretty vast. What I mean by that is the fact that there are multiple contributing factors that lead up to college. Whether it be FAFSA applications, college applications, letters of recommendation, etc, everything during senior year seems to just build you up into college regardless if that is what you truly want to do or not. Making the whole idea of college less pleasant, particularly when these requirements for college become requirements to simply graduate
Personally for me, I always said I would go to college but now as the time approaches, I feel as if I don’t know what I want anymore. College seems to be a bump in my road as of currently. And while I did apply to college, it would not be the end of the world if I don’t get accepted or decide to pick another path. The major that I chose for college is Business Administration – Management Human Resources. I wanted to study Psychology but as I did more research on it, it just seemed like it was out of my reach. I know that with the major I chose I will still find a way to fulfill myself and make a steady living which is what many students think about.
Nonetheless, the way that everything is turning out to be, it seems like college has become more of a necessity rather than a choice to those who wish to pursue a higher education.
