At Hoover High School, a club that was recently brought back to life is the Chess Club.
The club itself did exist in previous years, though due to a lack of members, it was a checkmate and the club was over.
However, with the help of senior and club president, Jared Gracias, the Chess Club is thriving. Mr. Gonzales, the club advisor, oversees meetings, which are held in room 203 on Mondays after school at 3:45pm, and Wednesdays during lunch at 12:25pm.
The club currently has approximately 15 members, though is expected to grow as we move forward into the school year. Vice President Wolf Santizo, secretary Elizabeth Arguelles, and treasurer Daniel Perez, all play a huge role in the club’s functioning status. Whether you are a beginner, or an experienced player, Chess Club is welcome to all. The club’s overall mission is to learn and improve chess tactics, strategies, and skills, while simultaneously fostering a fun and engaging environment for players of all levels.
Jared restarted Chess Club for many reasons. A few memorable ones include wanting to create a personal and involved community, as well as bring a calculated addition to Hoover High School. Chess Club hopes to accumulate more members who are extremely passionate and interested in this board game.
