Many students, especially in the City Heights area of San Diego, heavily depend on the bus as their main form of transportation, going to school or work.
The free bus pass program called the Youth Opportunity Pass, was first introduced and launched on May 1, 2022 for youth ages six through eighteen. Although originally was set to end in July 2023, but has been extended multiple times, and is still active today. It is currently being sponsored by the San Diego Association of Governments, and available through June 30, 2026, but is always being renewed for a longer extension. In addition, not only does the Youth Opportunity Pass give access to free bus rides but it also includes trolleys and other transit services provided by the region’s transit system. Not only does this help families save money but it also brings access to new opportunities, internships, jobs, promotes independence, and helps the environment by reducing traffic and pollution in our atmosphere.
Obtaining a free bus pass is an extremely easy process that doesn’t require much work. Depending on your school, some may distribute free Youth Opportunity Passes if you ask the front office. Another way you can gain access to a free bus pass is by downloading the PRONTO app on your smartphone and selecting a youth pass or you can always physically register at a MTS, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System Store or North County Transit District customer service for more information.
Additionally, many students like, junior Amy Munoz, have expressed gratitude and appreciation due to this program. Amy expresses that it helps her travel more efficiently without having to worry about carrying change all the time and helps her attend after school activities and programs with ease. As a member of Cardinals Interact, softball, and mariachi, she has to stay after school almost everyday. Therefore, she would need the bus in order to get home safely, since by the time she’s headed home it’s pretty late into the afternoon or evening. In the end, the Youth Opportunity Pass is essential for students’ school life and personal life.
