Unlike some of the previously mentioned shows, Sakamoto Days adopts a gentler approach in terms of tackling dark themes; instead that is stabilized with action packed sequences meshed together with comedic moments and themes of a “found family”.
The narrative concentrates on former notorious hitman, Taro Sakamoto, who following retirement, fell in love and started a family of his very own, all while letting himself go and settling into the mundane life of a convenience store clerk. Still the notoriety of this reputation lingers; disrupting the tranquility of that life, which is further emphasized when former colleagues moreover adversaries disrupt the mundanity of that life. Fearing the likelihood of loved ones being ensnared with his past, Sakamoto–aided by a ragtag group of three ex-criminals, each from diverse corners of the underworld–must confront whoever stands between him and the mundane style of life he desires to protect, whilst maintaining his ordinary facade.
As for the humor, it is represented by several gags spread across the show. Utilizing a juxtaposition of physical slap stick, in tandem with over-the-top scenarios, that subvert audience expectations, provide similar comedy to that of shows like One Punch Man, or Mashle. For example, most commonly employed are gags that initiate Sakamoto to utilize everyday objects in absurd unlikely methods during high-stake combat situations, or the dead-pan stoic reactions of Sakamoto in serious circumstances. Aside from the comedy, the cast also gives people to keep watching, for their unique personalities. A list of fan favorites include: Mr. Takamura, a mysterious elderly master swordsman described to be a “killer with no brakes,” Yoichi Nagumo, a carefree shapeshifter assassin known for annoying those around him, and Osaragi, an apathetic hitwoman who exhibits a childish personality.
Overall the series is riveting and jam-packed with exciting moments that will make one want to see what occurs next. Though be warned as since the series revolves around hitmen, there will be moments where extreme violence will be shown alongside the action. The show is only available on Netflix.
