Ivan Cornejo is one of my favorite artists because his music reflects real life emotions and everyday struggles.
Cornejo is a Mexican American singer and songwriter born on June 5, 2004, in Riverside, California. At the age of 7, he started teaching himself how to play guitar by watching YouTube tutorials. His early songs reflected his upbringing by blending music with his personal life experiences. His lyrics often focused on teenage love, heartbreak, and feeling misunderstood, all emotions he had experienced as a teenager.
He released his debut album Alma Vacia in 2021, and the single “Esta Danada,” which is one of my favorite songs of his, and one that brought him widespread recognition. In 2024 he released Mirada, further securing his place as a leading young artist as well as earning himself a strong following among Gen Z listeners.
Cornejo has achieved significant success at a young age, establishing himself as an influential artist. His albums have reached the top of the Billboard Latin and Regional Mexican charts. He has received major recognition through Billboard Latin Awards wins and nominations. He helped popularize the sad sierreno style by mixing emotional strokes with traditional Mexican music and modern influences, resonating deeply with young listeners worldwide. Fans love Cornejo because he is genuine and relatable. His music openly talks about heartbreak, sadness and feeling broken–all emotions we experience as teens as we continue to grow up.
His music helps listeners feel seen and vulnerable with their feelings that help listeners feel less alone. His soft vocals and simple guitar style make his songs feel personal, as if he is telling his own story. I admire how he blends traditional Mexican music with modern sounds, creating beautiful melodies. Many fans connect with him not just as an artist but as someone who truly understands their feelings. His lyrics often sound like thoughts listeners might keep to themselves, which make them feel understood, seeing themselves in his songs.
